After making films like "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam", "Devdas" and "Black" with established stars, Sanjay Leela Bhansali now teams up with two newcomers to 'rediscover' his own innocence in "Saawariya".

The love story is the debut vehicle of two star kids - Rishi Kapoor's son Ranbir and Anil Kapoor's daughter Sonam.

"After 'Black', where I worked with established stars, I reached a point where I needed to go beyond the stars, to rediscover my own innocence with the help of new talent. 'Saawariya' is about innocent love," Bhansali told IANS in an interview.

Talking about his new project, Bhansali said he couldn't afford to falter in "Saawariya".

"I can't go wrong in 'Saawariya'. It involves the career of two new talents. I feel Ranbir and Sonam can bring a new style of acting. Of course, they do have their parents' qualities."

Bhansali feels being star children is advantageous because it gives them access to important filmmakers.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is enjoying his new found image on television. Needless to say that he is enjoying being judge on a weekly celebrity dance show Jhalak Dikhala Ja. He is enthusiastically giving comments on choreography these days but when it comes to his forthcoming film Saawariya he prefers to keep everything under wraps. According to him Saawariya is the most difficult film that he has made so far. This is the first time he is working with newcomers like Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor. Even though he is not interested in revealing much details about this film our source says that Saawariya talks about a love story in which a Hindu boy falls in love with a Muslim girl. Is it true Sanjay that Ranbir plays a Hindu boy and Sonam plays a Muslim girl?

The two debutant stars of one of the year's most eagerly awaited films Saawariya, Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor, were unveiled by director Sanjay Leela Bhansali the movie's music release at Mumbai's JW Marriott hotel on Saturday night.

The two pedigreed stars -- Ranbir is the son of Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh and, more importantly, the grandson of showman Raj Kapoor, while Sonam is Anil Kapoor's daughter -- have been kept under wraps by Bhansali -- barring a cover story in Filmfare magazine this month -- for worry that media attention may affect their innocence which he wanted to capture in his celluloid love story.

Saawariya also has performances by Bhansali favourites Salman Khan (Khamoshi, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam) and Rani Mukerji (Black). While Salman escorted Sonam to the dais on Saturday, Rani did the honours with Ranbir.

Proud parents Rishi and Neetu were present at the music launch as were Anil and Sunita Kapoor. The first family of Hindi films was in attendance, in the personae of Rishi Kapoor's mother Krishna Raj Kapoor, elder brother Randhir Kapoor and his wife Babita, younger sister Reema Jain and her husband, and youngest brother Rajiv Kapoor. His eldest sister Ritu Nanda and her family and his nieces Karisma and Kareena Kapoor were not present.

The music has been composed by Monty Sharma, composer Pyarelal's nephew, who also composed the background score for Devdas and Black.

Saawariya is slated for a Diwali release, November 9, and will go head on with the other blockbuster, Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om, starring Shah Rukh Khan and debutant Deepika Padukone , also releasing that day

Anil Kapoor anxious about Saawariya

Bollywood star Anil Kapoor's daughter Sonam is making her debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's much-awaited Saawariya, and the proud father can't stop raving about her.

"I'm numbed when I look at her finesse on screen," said Kapoor, who feels Sonam is lucky to have Saawariya as her launch pad with a big banner and an acclaimed filmmaker backing her.

But he is worried about people having too many expectations from his daughter.

"I virtually crawled up to where I am. Also, there were no expectations riding on me whereas there's much expected frrom Sonam. More than being the father's daughter, the expectations come from being Sanjay Bhansali's heroine."

"I never knew Sonam wanted to be an actress. Her decision was a bolt from the blue. By the time I got to know her ambitions, Sanjay was already working with her," Anil told IANS in an interview.

Ques: How does it feel to share camera space with your daughter?

Ans: I'm numbed when I look at her finesse on screen. I'm just so anxious about Saawariya. I know she has done her best. And now we can only wait for reactions. You know, when I saw her in the rushes I wasn't just looking at her. I was also looking at the entire film. There's a father and a film person looking proudly at Saawariya. As someone who understands cinema, I can recognise the excellence of Saawariya. Everything works in it. Sonam is in a win-win situation.

Ques: Unlike you when you started out.

Ans: That's right. I started with bit roles in Ek Baar Kaho and Hamare Tumhare, and then made my way up. Sonam has Sony Pictures and Sanjay Leela Bhansali backing her ambitions. How much higher can she start? There's so much sincerity in the project. As a matter of fact, my responsibilities towards Sonam were taken over by Sanjay. I don't think I could've done a better job.

Ques: Were you tempted to launch her?

Ans: No way! I never knew Sonam wanted to be an actress. Her decision was a bolt from the blue. By the time I got to know her ambitions, Sanjay was already working with her.

Ques: Sanjay Bhansali compares Sonam to Waheeda Rehman and Rekha. What do you think?

Ans: I'm speechless when he says that. Sonam has a certain god-given presence. What can I say about her? To me she's my child. I just want her to work hard and look after herself. She must enjoy herself while acting. In "Saawariya" she has surprised me. But honestly she has a long way to go.

Ques: Were you pained when she had to push herself so hard for her debut film?

Ans: Look, I'm a very hard worker myself. I've pushed myself beyond mycapacity all my life. I'd expect nothing less from Sonam. Nothing comes easy in life. Hard work is the only way to succeed. I don't believe in sitting back and letting destiny take over. Not sleeping and working around-the-clock, these are essential to achieve excellence. Recently I went to release the album of Ustad Bismillah Khan's pupil Shubha Ghosh. The famous classical dancer Sitara Devi was also there. I told her she was so lucky to have her guru's guidance.

Ques: You never had that kind of guidance?

Ans: I virtually crawled up to where I am. Also, there were no expectations riding on me whereas there's much expected from Sonam. More than being her father's daughter, the expectations come from being Sanjay Bhansali's heroine.

I feel the guru-shishya tradition has all but vanished. With Sanjay-Sonam the guru-shishya tradition is back. He has been as much a father to her as me. The way he has trained both Ranbir and Sonam is unbelievable. I wish I had a Sanjay Bhansali to launch me. The end product and the reaction to it are stupendous.

Ques: Why is your wife so aloof from it all?

Ans: She's just shy of the film industry. But she's completely involved with Sonam's career. Sunita is happy with her privacy. She has her own friends away from the industry. I believe that in every marriage the partners should do what makes them happy. She says I've spoilt her completely. I've never persuaded her to do anything.

Ques: And one filmy spouse is enough in a family.

Ans: Oh yes! I'm unabashedly filmy. I love cinema. That's my life. I've never been obsessed with money. I've done films for the love of cinema. In that sense, Shabana Azmi has always been a role model. She has made a big contribution to my life and career. I can never forget that.

Ans: Rishi Kapoor was your colleague. Now you and he share the same anxieties as expectant fathers?

Ans: Yes. We go back a long way. Not that we meet every day. But we've always been very close. My mom and Rishi's mom Krishnaji have been friends for over 50 years. Not a single day goes by without their interaction. The two families share a really deep bond.

Ques: Would Sonam's presence in the film industry make you self-conscious?

Ans: Me and self-consciousness don't go together. I'm in a totally different zone. I make people self-conscious. But yes, of course it makes a difference. Suddenly Sonam is there to remind the industry of my age. I'm exposed.
